Susan Murphy, PhD, to Present on Personalized Just-In-Time Adaptive Interventions at DPM Grand Rounds
We are thrilled to welcome Susan Murphy, PhD, as the invited presenter at June’s upcoming Grand Rounds hosted by the Department of Preventive Medicine (DPM) and organized by David Mohr, PhD, Director of CBITs and DPM’s Division Chief of Behavioral Medicine. Dr. Murphy is the Mallinckrodt Professor of Statistics and Computer Science at Harvard University, and her research specializes in developing personalized Just-In-Time Adaptive Interventions.
Just-In-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs) are an innovative intervention design that aims to provide the right type and amount of support at the right time by adapting to an individual’s changing internal and contextual state. Personalizing JITAIs involves using AI algorithms to update and improve the JITAI decision rules as individuals experience the intervention. Dr. Murphy’s talk will explore how AI algorithms can be used to personalize JITAIs and enhance their effectiveness by continuously updating decision rules in response to individual engagement.
This work aligns closely with the mission of CBITs, which addresses the global mental health crisis through technology-driven solutions. CBITs uses innovative research and collaboration with healthcare and community partners to develop evidence-based digital interventions that are accessible, equitable, and personalized to expand access to mental health care.
Given this shared emphasis on advancing personalized, data-driven interventions, Dr. Mohr is particularly excited that Dr. Murphy’s work will be the focus of this Grand Rounds presentation. As Dr. Mohr explains, “Susan has been a leading researcher developing data analytic methods for Just-In-Time Adaptive Interventions that can personalize digital health interventions through sequencing content and individualizing sequences of messages.” He adds, “Her work is at the forefront of making digital health interventions tailored to the needs of individuals, any time, and in any given context.”
Dr. Murphy, a 2013 MacArthur Fellow and elected member of both the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences, brings exceptional expertise in developing statistical methods that inform the delivery of health interventions in real time.
Dr. Murphy is excited to share her work with DPM, and “can't wait to hear feedback from scientists in Preventive Medicine about how Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions might be used to improve behavioral health.”
Murphy will present “Personalizing Just-In-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs)” on Thursday, June 12, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The event is open to members of the Feinberg School of Medicine and the broader Northwestern community. No registration is required. For more details, visit the Northwestern Events Calendar. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from a leading expert in digital health innovation.
